Aftercare After Bone GraftsPeople who need a bone graft have a lot of questions about the bone grafting procedure. One of the most important questions you need to ask the dentist is about caring for your mouth after a bone graft procedure. Here is important information you need to know before you head to the dentist for that bone graft.

What Is a Bone Graft?

Bone grafts are silvers of bone that are inserted into the existing bone to encourage bone growth. In dentistry, bone grafts are often used to get jawbones ready for implants. Bone grafts can be from your own body, a donor bone from someone else, or even animal bone. Once the bone graft is inserted, the bone grows stronger on its own.

Bone Graft Procedure

In the bone graft procedure, dentists use bone material to fill in the cavity left by your missing tooth. After cleaning and preparing the site for the bone graft, the bone material is placed inside the tooth cavity. Usually, a tiny incision is made in the gum to place the bone graft inside. Then, the entire area is covered with a membrane to protect it.

Aftercare for Bone Grafts

You may have some swelling and bruising after the bone graft procedure. You might experience some discomfort as well, which you should be able to relieve with over-the-counter medications. Be sure that you are eating soft foods for the next few days to ensure that you don't irritate the bone graft site. You might see or feel small, grain-like bone pieces that leak from the site, which is normally nothing to worry about. However, if you have a fever, intense pain, and swelling, or large pieces of bone begin to leak from the site, it's time to give the dentist a call.
