How Long Does A Dental Implant Procedure Take?

Posted on 7/10/2023 by Pacific Oral and Facial Surgery Center
How Long Does A Dental Implant Procedure Take?Dental implants are used to replace missing teeth. They offer a more permanent or long-lasting solution to teeth replacement. It's a dental surgical procedure done in stages. Typical dental implants require a lot of healing time and patience. Understanding the timelines for each stage of the process can help estimate the time it would take to complete the tooth implant treatment.

Initially, Examination is Conducted

The dental surgeon will do a thorough medical checkup of gum tissues and jawbone. It will be done to evaluate whether your jaw bone and gums are fit or healthy enough to accommodate the dental implant surgery and the titanium implants. In some cases where the jawbone is not in good condition, it has to be rebuilt, a process that extends the time needed to wait for the actual surgery.

The Implant Screw Placement

After the dentist is satisfied with the condition of your mouth, the actual surgery takes place. A screw-like metal post made of titanium or zirconia will be fitted on your jawbone to act like the roots of natural teeth. The process of inserting the posts will take one to two hours. After the operation, the oral surgeon can put on artificial crowns to protect the wound for up to three months until it heals.

Fitting of the Crowns

When the implant surgery has completely healed an abutment or a post-like frame is fitted on the implant. The abutment acts like a cushion to absorb shock between the implant and the crowns. Finally, a crown is placed on top of the abutment to complete the operation.

The total healing time will depend on an individual and any pre-surgery or additional treatments required. The time you start your medical examinations to the time you are fitted with a crown ranges from six to nine months.
