Can I Drink Milk After Wisdom Teeth Removal?

Posted on 11/15/2023 by Pacific Oral and Facial Surgery Center
Asian woman holding the side of her mouth from pain should see Pacific Oral & Facial Surgery Center in Livermore, CAIn the first days after you have had wisdom teeth extraction, a dentist recommends you steer clear of dairy products including milk and cheese. The reason is that you have to give time for the wound to heal. A dentist may advise you to avoid milk in the first days after getting your wisdom teeth extracted, and there is a good reason for this.

Why Avoid Milk After Extraction

Dairy has proteins known to encourage bacterial growth and they could heighten the danger of infection. Dairy offers an ideal environment for bacterial growth, and these bacteria can contribute to swelling or inflammation, and discomfort within the gums and nearby areas. Again, dairy products make it challenging for the body to digest them because they have casein protein. This protein slows down digestion and may increase inflammation in the entire body including the site of operation. As such the healing process may be delayed.

If you are likely to vomit from the effects of anesthesia, then milk might not be the drink for you after teeth extraction. Vomiting can cause the blood clot formed on the wound to dislodge from it, causing a dry socket accompanied by pain.

Therefore, it is prudent that you try easing into consuming dairy probably for a few days following your wisdom teeth extraction or any other oral surgery. Talk to the oral surgeon to get a signal on when you should start consuming dairy foods and drinks or beverages.

When and Why It's Okay to Drink Milk After Wisdom Teeth Extraction?

Milk is okay to drink, depending on your condition, but you have to wait a little. Milk assists in quick recovery from dental surgery, as it is rich in calcium and proteins. Again, milk is high in vitamin D, which is perfect for healthy bones. Drinking milk at a moderate temperature is recommended. It is good to seek the advice of your dental surgeon before drinking milk after wisdom teeth removal.
