Dentist looking at xray with patient at Pacific Oral & Facial Surgery Center in Livermore, CAOral and maxillofacial surgery continues incorporating new technologies that improve precision, efficiency, and patient outcomes. Recent tech innovations are transforming many aspects of oral surgical care.

3D Imaging and Printing

3D CBCT scans provide detailed images of the mouth and jaws for surgical planning. Combined with 3D printing, oral surgeons can create accurate anatomic models and customized guides. These improve accuracy in complex reconstructions.

Computer-Assisted Surgery

New computer-assisted surgery systems use pre-operative CT scans with specialized software to create a navigational guide. This technology can track the location of surgical instruments in real time in relation to the anatomy of the patient. It enhances precision and safety.

Robotic Surgery

Robotic tools like the DaVinci system are gaining use in oral surgery. The robotic arms offer greater agility and access compared to human hands alone. Early applications include tumor resection and cleft palate repair.

Telemedicine

Telemedicine allows patients to consult with oral surgeons through video conferencing. Patients can conveniently access specialty care online. Follow-ups and non-urgent issues can often be addressed through telemedicine visits.

Advanced Visualization

Visualization aids like operative microscopes, loupe magnification, intraoperative navigation, and endoscopes give surgeons enhanced visual perspective. This optimizes visibility and control in technically challenging procedures.

LED Dental Lights

Introducing brighter, whiter LED dental lights has significantly improved visibility and illumination over older halogen operative lights. LED technology produces minimal heat and can be calibrated to mimic natural sunlight. This optimized lighting illuminates the deepest structures of the mouth during procedures.

Laser Tools

The integration of laser tools into oral surgery offers cutting precision and improved hemostasis for minimal bleeding and swelling. Both hard and soft tissue dental lasers are now available. Lasers enhance healing and reduce post-operative complications. They allow less traumatic procedures with faster recoveries.
