Talking to Your Oral Surgeon About Ear Aches

When you have an ear ache, your first thought might not be to see an oral surgeon. But sometimes, problems in your mouth can actually cause pain in your ear. This article explores how those aches might be related and when it's a good idea to discuss it with your oral surgeon.

The Connection Between Your Mouth and Your Ears

Your temporomandibular joint, or TMJ, is like a hinge connecting your jawbone to your skull. It's located right in front of your ear. Because of its location, problems with your TMJ can easily cause pain that feels like it's coming from inside your ear. Muscles, nerves, and ligaments surround the TMJ, and they're all interconnected. When something goes wrong with the TMJ, it can irritate these surrounding structures, leading to referred pain in the ear.

What Kind of Oral Issues Can Cause Ear Pain?

Several oral health problems can lead to ear aches. One of the most common is temporomandibular joint disorder, or TMD. TMD can cause clicking, popping, or pain in the jaw joint, and it can also lead to pain that radiates to the ear.

Another potential cause is teeth grinding, also known as bruxism. Grinding your teeth, especially at night, puts a lot of stress on the TMJ and surrounding muscles, which can then cause ear pain.

Sometimes, dental infections, particularly those affecting the back teeth, can also trigger ear pain. The infection and inflammation can spread and irritate the nerves that run near the ear.

Issues with your teeth can also cause referred pain. For example, a tooth that is cracked or has a deep cavity can cause discomfort that radiates to other areas of the face, including the ear. Even problems with a restoration, such as a filling or crown that doesn't fit properly, can sometimes contribute to muscle imbalances and ear ache.

When Should You Talk to Your Oral Surgeon?

If you're experiencing persistent ear pain, especially if it's accompanied by any of the following symptoms, it's a good idea to talk to your oral surgeon:

•  Jaw pain or stiffness
•  Clicking or popping in the jaw joint
•  Difficulty opening or closing your mouth fully
•  Headaches
•  Facial pain
•  Teeth grinding or clenching

Your oral surgeon is uniquely qualified to evaluate your TMJ, your bite, and the overall health of your mouth. They can help determine if your ear pain is related to an oral health problem and recommend appropriate treatment.

What to Expect During Your Appointment

When you see your oral surgeon about ear pain, they'll likely start by taking a thorough medical history and asking you about your symptoms. They'll then perform a clinical examination, which may include checking your jaw joint for tenderness, listening for clicking or popping sounds, and evaluating your bite.

They may also recommend imaging tests, such as X-rays or a CT scan, to get a better look at your TMJ and surrounding structures. Based on their findings, they'll be able to develop a treatment plan tailored to your specific needs. Treatment options can range from simple measures like heat and ice to more advanced interventions.

Don't Ignore That Ear Ache

Persistent ear pain can be a sign of an underlying oral health problem. By talking to your oral surgeon, you can get to the root of the issue and find relief. Don't hesitate to schedule an appointment if you're concerned about ear pain and think it might be related to your teeth or jaw. Taking care of your oral health can often lead to improved overall health and well-being.
