Where Are Your Replacement Parts Being Made?

Posted on 7/4/2017 by Olivia Ortega
Fortunately, humans are living longer. Unfortunately, the longer we live the more likely we are to suffer from degenerative diseases and damage to our bodies from normal physiologic wear. These conditions may present as osteoarthritis, periodontal disease, tooth wear, cardiovascular disease, and a myriad of others. Biomedical and regenerative sciences are making great progress to develop biologic solutions to replace many of our worn out body parts. In oral and maxillofacial surgery, tissue scaffolds populated with stems cells are starting to be used to replace parts of peoples’ faces lost due to trauma or tumors. I look forward to including these in my practice when they are available and proven.

However, the current best options for replacing heart valves, missing teeth, knees, and hips are based on non-biologicaly derived materials which have years of research and proven sucess. For example dental implants are made of a commercially pure titanium alloy with decades of safety and efficacy. Amercian tissue banks that provide us with bone tissue from human donors are under very strict regulations to ensure patient safety. The bone screws and plates that we use for reconstructive facial surgery must meet FDA criteria and strict sterilization protocols before they can be placed in your body.

The title of this blog is very relevant to you the patient. As you might imagine, the market for dental implants, tissue replacements, and reconstructive devices is growing as our population ages. This is an attractive market for medical device manufacturers and suppliers of biologic tissues. As in other aspects of our existence, all things are not equal. It is important as a health care consumer and patient that you know where devices and tissues originate which are placed into YOUR body. Late one night I was surfing the web looking for analytic scientific equipment and came across an overseas website that was willing to sell me dental implants at an incredibly low price. These devices are not FDA approved but available to anyone with a PayPal account.

At Pacific Oral and Facial Center, we use only approved medical devices that meet the highest standards of testing and safety. In the image embedded in this text you will see the manufacturing facility for the dental implants we use. It is based in Yorba Linda, California. I have seen the factory, met the gifted people who produce these amazing devices, and witnessed the standards they adhere to. This is a great source of confidence to me as a surgeon knowing that I am backed by a company that is the world leader in dental implant technology.

Please feel free to inquire about any of the devices or biologic materials we utilize in our practice. As alway your safety and wellness are our greatest concern.

Sincerely,

Michael L. Beckley, D.D.S.
