 After you get into an auto accident, you check yourself for any injuries. You look for blood or protruding bones. You look for the obvious signs of injury, but there are some injuries from an auto accident that are not so obvious. They may not appear right away, or they may just cause minor discomfort or pain. A fractured jaw is one of the injuries that you may not notice at first. It is an injury whose signs can get worse over time. Knowing the signs can help you know whether you may have fractured your jaw during an auto accident. The Obvious Signs Of Jaw FractureThere are many ways to tell that you have done something to your jaw after an auto accident. During an accident, your head is jerked and pulled in different directions. That type of trauma can cause damage, including a fracture of the jaw. Trauma can also result from the jaw hitting parts of the car.If there are obvious signs of trauma, such as blood, bruising and pain in and around the jaw, a fracture is possible. If you think that your jaw hit something during het accident and suffer from these types of symptoms, you need to get checked for a possible fracture or other problem such as a dislocation of the jaw. The Less Obvious Signs A major fracture can show obvious signs, but it is also possible to have small fractures in the jaw. In these cases, the signs are less obvious. Some pain can happen, but the pain is not always severe. You may just think of it as normal discomfort after the accident. People with fractures also may have problems opening and closing their mouth. They may have trouble speaking easily and clearly. If there is pain associated with these types of activities, a fracture is possible. The best way to diagnose a fracture jaw after an auto accident is through x-rays and other types of imaging. That is why it is always a good idea to come into our office after an accident whether you suspect a fractured jaw or not.
