How Platelet Rich Plasma Can Increase Healing

How Platelet Rich Plasma Can Increase HealingAlthough regenerative medicine sounds like something from a science-fiction movie, it is very real. In recent decades, doctors have come to realize the human body is in some ways able to heal itself. We all know we scab over a scrape, but imagine instead of it taking a week to heal and the scab to fall off it took two days? That is one of the principals of regenerative medicine. It tries to harness the ability of the body to heal itself and simply increases its strength exponentially.

That is part of the beauty of the platelet rich plasma treatment protocol. The patient is quite literally treating themselves. That is right. The platelet rich plasma comes from the patient. It is manipulated to supercharge it before it is put back into the patient. It helps to increase the pace of healing.

What are the Benefits of Platelet Rich Plasma?

Plasma is one of the components of our blood. It is the liquid part made up of mostly water and proteins. This provides the mechanism by which treatment can be delivered as well as the red and white blood cells along with platelets. They are important because they provide the building blocks for healing, allowing the blood to clock. Unlocking the path to rapid healing is unlocked when platelets are activated.

Platelet rich plasma is a concentrated version of the patient's own platelets that is injected back into the patient to heal injuries at an accelerated rate. These platelets are taken from blood given by the patient. It is separated using a centrifuge before the platelets are removed and readied for injection into the surgical site.

By healing faster with fewer complications, the need for strong pain medication is a thing of the past. Because the platelets are literally taken from the patient there is no chance of an allergic reaction. If there is a surgical procedure in your near future, give us a call to find out about platelet rich plasma.
