What Flossing Does to Help You Fight Off Gum Disease

What Flossing Does to Help You Fight Off Gum DiseaseA shocking percentage of American adults over 30 have some degree of gum disease, with estimates ranging between 50 and 75 percent. You should never skip flossing as part of your daily oral hygiene routine, as flossing can help prevent gum disease and even reverse it in its early stages.

What Causes Gum Disease?

There are different stages of gum disease, from a mild form called gingivitis to more advanced periodontal disease. Gum disease is caused by the bacteria in plaque that accumulates on and in between your teeth as well as along the gum line. Over time, these bacteria causes inflammation. Plaque buildup is typically the result of poor oral hygiene, but there are also certain factors that make some people more prone to developing periodontitis, such as diabetes, smoking, and a family history of gum disease. There is even some research to indicate a connection between stress and periodontal disease.

Symptoms of Gum Disease

Contrary to what some people might think, it is not normal for your gums to bleed when you floss. If your gums bleed when you floss or brush your teeth, or when you eat, you may have some form of gum disease. Other signs of gum disease include bad breath, red or swollen gums, or permanent teeth that feel loose.
Gingivitis, or mild gum disease, can be reversed by following a proper oral hygiene routine that includes flossing once a day and keeping up with your regular dental checkups. If left untreated, however, gingivitis can progress into more advanced periodontal disease. At this later stage, periodontitis not only leads to further dental complications like tooth loss, but can increase your risk of serious medical issues like heart disease and diabetes as well.

How Does Flossing Help Prevent Gum Disease?

Studies show that less than 20 percent of people floss their teeth every day, but flossing once a day is the best way to prevent gum disease from developing. Flossing your teeth daily can also reverse gingivitis that has already begun. Flossing removes plaque from areas where your toothbrush cannot reach, like under the gum line and in between teeth.
