Tips to Overcome Anxiety Before An Oral Surgery

Posted on 3/8/2021 by Pacific Oral and Facial Surgery Center
Tips to Overcome Anxiety Before An Oral SurgeryHaving to go to the dentist for oral surgery is a situation no one wants to be in. So, if you need to go for oral surgery, it's understandable if you're a little anxious about the procedure.
However, oral surgery is largely unavoidable, and to have it go smoothly, you need to feel calm and relaxed. Here are some tips to help overcome anxiety before oral surgery.

Take A Friend Along

When going for oral surgery, taking a trusted friend with you can help to overcome feelings of nervousness and anxiety. In many cases, going to the dentist alone can worsen your anxiety, partly because you have nothing to focus on. Taking a close friend with you when you go for oral surgery can provide extra comfort while distracting you from your fears.

Use Relaxation Techniques

Relaxation techniques are quite helpful in overcoming anxiety. When you go for oral surgery to the dentist, try some relaxing breathing exercises. When you focus on your breathing, your mind will divert away from the things that are making you feel anxious.

Opt For Sedation

If you face severe anxiety and simple relaxation techniques don't help to control it, you can speak to your oral surgeon about the sedation options they can offer. FDA-approved sedation options include local anesthetics, IV medications, or nitrous oxide (also known as laughing gas), offering different degrees of sedation ranging from a relaxed and calm state to complete sleep. This will help you stay assured that you won't feel any pain during the procedure.
