Oral Thrush - Symptoms, Causes, and Prevention

Itching, burning, and redness from a yeast infection are irritating, but what happens when you develop a yeast infection inside your mouth? Oral thrush causes creamy white lesions, usually in your tongue or inner cheeks. It usually occurs in infants, seniors, and adults with lower immunity. Even though these bumps usually go away, they can spread to other body parts and cause serious complications.
At Pacific Oral & Facial Surgery Center, Michael L. Beckley, DDS and can help you deal with oral thrush symptoms and treat it accordingly.
Oral Thrush Symptoms
Initially, oral thrush may not cause any symptoms. However, as the infection gets worse, you'll begin to notice white or yellow patches on your cheeks, tongue, lips, or gums. If you accidentally scrape the thrush while brushing, it will slightly bleed and cause burning in your mouth. Other symptoms include difficulty swallowing, taste loss, and a bad taste in your mouth.
Oral Thrush Causes
Oral thrush occurs when your immune system fails to repel harmful invading organisms, such as viruses, bacteria, and fungi. This failure increases the number of candida fungus in the mouth, which allows the infection to take hold. Medications that kill friendly bacteria in your mouth can also cause oral thrush.
Oral Thrush Prevention
The best way to reduce your risk of developing oral rush is to brush your teeth at least twice a day. Rinsing your mouth after taking your medication can save the good bacteria in your mouth. If you wear dentures, remove them at night and clean them every day. If you have diabetes, maintain good blood sugar control to reduce the amount of sugar in your saliva.
