Is It Time for a Root Canal?

A root canal is an oral procedure that cleans out decay in your tooth root or pulp. Your tooth has a layer called the enamel that is located on the outside. There is also the dentin, a second layer that lies beneath the enamel. In addition, there is a soft inside core extending into the deeper parts of your root. This core contains a section known as the dental pulp that consists of blood vessels, nerves, and numerous connective tissues. When the soft core is affected by tooth decay, it can become infected or inflamed.

In some cases, the soft pulp could become necrotic (dead). In such cases, you will need a root canal procedure to clean out the infection and decay. Therefore, if you are experiencing persistent pain in your tooth and tooth sensitivity, it may be time to consider having a root canal.

Persistent Pain

If you are experiencing persistent tooth pain, it could be a sign that you need to undergo the root canal procedure. This pain is sharp and consistent, bothering you from time to time. In some cases, this pain might disappear for a few days, but it will always come back. Also, you might experience this pain deep in the tooth bone, especially in the morning. You might also feel it in your jaw, face, or surrounding teeth.

Tooth Sensitivity

Experiencing tooth sensitivity could also be a sign that you need a root canal procedure. If your tooth hurts when you drink a cup of coffee or when you take in warm food, it may be because of your exposed dentine. This sensitivity will feel like a sharp pain or a dull ache.

In some cases, tooth sensitivity disappears on its own after some time. However, if the sensitivity lingers on for a long time, it could be a sign of an underlying condition that needs a root canal.
