Sjogren's syndrome

Posted on 8/8/2022 by Pacific Oral and Facial Surgery Center
Sjogren's syndromeSjogren's syndrome is an autoimmune disease that affects your salivary glands causing them to reduce the rate of saliva production. Saliva washes away food particles that may be lingering in your mouth. It also neutralizes acids present in your teeth that weaken your enamel. Lack of sufficient saliva in your mouth to perform these functions may lead to tooth decay. Our specialists give a detailed description of how to reduce the effects of Sjogren's syndrome.

Increasing your water intake

Drinking more water may ease the effects of Sjogren's syndrome by offering extra hydration to your mouth. Water will also assist in washing away food particles and acid-producing bacteria and consequently reduce your chances of developing tooth decay.

Chewing sugarless gum

Our practice recommends chewing sugar-free gum as a way to stimulate the production of saliva. Sugar-free gum also contains ingredients that cannot be digested by acid-producing bacteria in your mouth, As a result, when the bacteria in your mouth fees on the contents of the sugarless gum, they are unable to digest it and they die.

Avoid smoking

Smoking is one of the major causes of dry mouth. If you have Sjogren's syndrome, smoking will only worsen your condition. We, therefore, recommend you cut down on your smoking in order to ease the effects of a dry mouth.

Taking vitamins

A dry mouth can cause further oral health complications such as swollen gums, and mouth and mouth sores. Our experts recommend increasing your intake of vitamins, especially vitamin C to help protect your immune system from infections including your teeth skin and bones. Stop by our offices to get the best remedies for a dry mouth and more tips on how to take care of your oral health.
