Sinus Lift and Grafting - Postoperative Instructions
Care of the mouth after surgery has an important effect on healing. Swelling, discomfort, bleeding, and restricted jaw movement are all expected. The following instructions can minimize these effects. PainDiscomfort is expected. We recommend that you start taking Ibuprofen (Advil or Motrin) every six hours for the next 3 days.Care of MouthDo not rinse your mouth or brush your teeth the day of surgery. The morning after surgery, rinse gently using the prescribed mouth wash. When brushing your teeth, the following day, avoid the surgical site.DietA "no chew" diet is recommended for at least 5 days to prevent disrupting the stitches and opening the surgical site. Drink plenty of fluids and avoid using straws; instead use a spoon if necessary. Avoid chewing in the area of your extraction or bone grafting.SwellingSwelling is at its greatest 2-3 days after surgery. After your surgery apply ice to the operated side of the face as soon as possible. Apply cold packs as much as possible. Continue through the day after your surgery. After 48 hours, begin to apply moist heat. Wet a wash cloth and microwave it for 20-30 seconds. Massage jaw area.NauseaNausea after surgery is not uncommon. Small sips of tea, 7-up or ginger ale may help.SmokingDo not smoke for at least two weeks following your surgery. Talk with your physician about quitting.BruisingIs quite common and can extend from your face down to your neck.BleedingIt is not unusual to have bleeding for 48 hours and periodic breakthrough bleeding for 10 days after surgery.
ActivityThe week after surgery, limited activity is best. Resting in a reclined position is most comfortable. DO NOT DRIVE A CAR AFTER SURGERY FOR 24 HOURS.Sinus Precautions After Oral Surgery - Avoid the following:
Notify your oral surgeon or nurse if you bleed from your nose. If you see bleeding from your nose, have neck stiffness, or increased sensitivity to bright light, or severe headache, call the clinic immediately. Notify your oral surgeon or nurse if you are unable to take any of your medications as prescribed. It is likely that you may be advised to take an antibiotic and decongestant as well as your regular pain medication. You must take these medications as prescribed. Do not stop taking them on your own. If you have a problem with any medication, please call us so that we can make an adjustment for you. StitchesStitches may be placed at the time of surgery. In most cases, they are expected to dissolve within 5-7 days following your surgery.NoteIn case of any problems, or if you have any questions, contact the office at any time. Please try to anticipate prescription refills or care problems during office hours. Prescriptions will not be filled over the weekend.EmergencyIf you feel you are experiencing a life threatening emergency, call 911 immediately. |
