Wisdom Teeth Removal
Livermore & Tracy CA

Your wisdom teeth, also called your third molars, are the last 4 of your 32 adult teeth to develop. They typically begin erupting in your late teen years or early 20s. While some people have no issues with their wisdom teeth, there are many people who are faced with significant complications as their wisdom teeth attempt to erupt. Problematic wisdom teeth need to go through the wisdom teeth removal process. Pacific Oral & Facial Surgery Center can help.

Why Do We Have Wisdom Teeth?

Long ago, wisdom teeth had a purpose. Before the invention of cooking, humans ate raw foods. Many of these foods were coarse. The wisdom teeth made it easier for humans to thoroughly chew their food. Back then, the jaw was also larger, easily accommodating these teeth. After cooking, however, foods were made easier to chew. The wisdom teeth became obsolete. Gradually, the size of the jaw began to decrease, reaching the size the human jaw is today. Even though they do not serve a purpose anymore, they continue to develop.

What Causes Impacted Wisdom Teeth?

Wisdom teeth can become impacted for many reasons.
•  There is not enough room in the jaw to accommodate them.
•  The teeth are blocked by bone or tissue growth.
•  The teeth are growing at an angle.

Effects of Impacted Wisdom Teeth on Your Mouth

Impacted wisdom teeth are those that cannot erupt properly through the gums. They may only partially erupt, or they may not be able to erupt at all. When wisdom teeth are impacted, they can lead to several different issues.
•  Overcrowding. If your jaw does not have enough room to accommodate the wisdom teeth, they can push against your other teeth as they attempt to erupt. Your other teeth are then pushed out of natural alignment, leading to overcrowding. Not only does overcrowding affect your smile, but it can also lead to issues such as bruxism and TMJ disorder.
•  Damage to adjacent teeth. If your wisdom teeth are growing at an angle, they can grow into the adjacent teeth. This can lead to cracks under the gum line, and this damage cannot be corrected with crowns.
•  Cysts. Cysts can develop as a result of impacted teeth or infections. They are fluid-filled sacs that are benign. While benign, they can do significant damage to your jawbone if they are not treated.
•  Localized infections. If a wisdom tooth is only partially erupted, it creates an ideal hiding place for bacteria and food particles. This can result in a localized infection known as pericoronitis.

Removing Problematic Wisdom Teeth

Impacted wisdom teeth affect your oral health and your quality of life. Along with all of the issues that they can cause, they can also cause a significant amount of pain. This pain can make it difficult to perform normal daily functions like eating or speaking. The best way to treat impacted wisdom teeth is to remove them. Because removing wisdom teeth can be a complex situation, we will refer you to, and work closely with, a trusted oral surgeon and provide you with aftercare instructions.

Removing problematic wisdom teeth can alleviate the pain that they cause while also restoring your oral health and quality of life. For more information, and to schedule your consultation, call Pacific Oral & Facial Surgery Center today at 925-290-7727.
